The horror and macabre has always been a huge draw for audience all across the world. Even though we denote fear to be a negative emotion, there is something almost cathartic about experiencing horror, on screen. Noted directors have excelled in creating excellent horror cinema that have turned out to be cult classics over the years. From films like The Shining to The Conjuring or Andhera, Purani Haveli and Bandh Darwaza, closer home, there is no dearth of takers to horror cinema.

And while filmmakers have made apt use of the genre over the years, what they have portrayed on screen is not always fictive. There are stranger things on heaven and Earth than what meets the eye and often filmmakers have used real life incidents of the unexplained and put them on the silver screen to satiate the cravings for the macabre for horror aficionados.

Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship

The Vicky Kaushal-starrer film which is set on an abandoned ship marooned off the coast of Mumbai is apparently based on a true story. According to reports, the Bhanu Pratap Singh film revolves around an alleged ‘ghost ship’ that washed ashore a few years back. While there were no crew members on board the unnamed ship, what made it spookier was that it remained completely undetected as it entered Indian waters.

The Exorcist

The cult film follows a 12-year-old girl who is possessed by a mysterious demonic entity, leading her mother to seek hep from two priests to save her daughter’s life. The film was based on a true story from 1949 where several news articles printed anonymous reports of an alleged possession and exorcism of a young boy. The event that happened in 1948 in Cottage City, Maryland is what is supposed to have been the basis of the famous film.

Stree

While the horror-comedy received rave reviews in Bollywood, it turns out that it is actually based on real life events. While the setting for the film is a fictive place in Madhya Pradesh, the film finds its roots in a rela urban legend that sprung up in Bengaluru during the 1990s where it was believed that a female entity was terrorising the town. According to reports, the town’s residents would write “Nale Ba” which translates to “come tomorrow” staving the wrath of the spirit.

The Amityville Horror

The film and its many sequels and spinoffs is actually based on a real-life incident and one of the most shocking and haunting cases in US history. In the film, a young couple are terrorized by demonic forces after moving into a large house that was the site of a grisly mass murder a year before. The film has its roots on a family murder. On November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed six members of his family at 112 Ocean Avenue, on the south shore of Long Island, New York. A year later the Lutz family moved into the same house, but left soon after complaining that they were terrorised by paranormal entity during their stay.

Ghost

While Vikram Bhatt’s Ghost is a forgettable flick, but the director had mentioned during interviews that the film had its basis on true newspaper reports about a man named Arne Johnson, who was tried for murder after he killed his landlord. During the case, the murder suspect claimed he was possessed by demons that made him murder the man.

The Conjuring

The famous film which has created an entire cinematic universe is actually based on the life of the Perron Family. In January 1971, the Perron Family moved into a farmhouse in Rhode Island, where Carolyn, Roger, and their five daughters claimed that they noticed strange things happening almost immediately after they moved in. In fact the demonic spirit of Bathsheba, who was shown in the film, was actually based on a certain Bathsheba Sherman who did life in the property during the mid-1800s and was rumoured to have been a Satanist. In the film Ed and Lorraine are paranormal investigators who attempt to rid a family of their home’s angry and evil spirit.
