The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) seized 104 gold bars weighing some 12 kilograms and worth around Tk 8.44 crore from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Dubai at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Sunday night.

The gold bars were seized from a Biman flight (BG-4148) which came from Dubai via Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram, and landed at the Dhaka airport at around 9:15pm on Sunday, said CIID director general Abdur Rouf at a press briefing at the CIID head office at Kakrail in the capital on Monday.

However, none was arrested in connection with the incident.

Abdur Rouf said the CIID learnt that smuggled gold bars might come by a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG 4148. Based on the tip-off, the CIID officials and employees took positions at different points at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram and Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. Subsequently, the flight landed at Dhaka airport at about 9:15pm.

After landing of the aircraft, CIID officials and employees entered the aircraft. Searching the cargo hold, they found 104 gold bars wrapped in three packets with scotch tapes and concealed inside three belts in the cargo hold, the CIID DG said.

The gold bars were brought with the purpose of ‘smuggling’ to avoid payment of duty, he said.

Two cases–one divisional case and another criminal case–were filed under the Customs Act 1969 over the seizure.

With the latest seizure, the customs intelligence has seized 66.96 kilograms of gold bars worth around Tk 47 crore in the fiscal year of 2021-22.

On October 6, the CIID seized 120 gold bars weighing around 14 kilograms from another Biman flight from Dubai at the Dhaka airport.
