Reckless driving has once made the headlines as two students lost their lives in a “race” between two buses of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan in the capital’s Shewra area.

They are–Dia Khanum, a first year student of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College, and Abdul Karim, a second year student of the same institution.

The accident took place around 12:30pm when two buses of the same company were racing each other, leaving several others severely injured.

According to the witnesses, a bus of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan ran over a group of students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College while they were waiting for vehicles near Hotel Radisson Blu, leaving two students dead on the spot and 12 others injured.

The injured were taken to Kurmitola General Hospital immediately after the accident. Later, four critically injured students were sent to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

CMH doctors said the condition of four others is “very critical” and the death toll may rise further.

Soon after the incident happened, angry mob and fellow students vandalised several numbers of vehicles near Radisson hotel in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon.

ASI Azizur Rahman of Cantonment Police Station said: “Two students were reportedly killed. Angry mob torched two buses and vandalised 50 more vehicles.”

“The vehicular movement on the Airport road was completely halted due to the rampage, causing severe traffic congestion on the route. Law enforcers are trying to bring the situation under control,” he added.

According to some unconfirmed sources, another student died at the hospital. But, no doctor confirmed it.
