At least three people were killed and around 50 others injured in a three-way collision involving two buses and a truck in Rajshahi city early today.

The accident occurred around 12:30am near Varendra University in Kharkhori Bazar area on Rajshahi-Natore bypass highway, police said.

The deceased were identified as Nasim Ali, 32, Jewel Rana, 28, and Mizanur Rahman, 26.

“Injured passengers were rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), where they are undergoing treatment in various wards,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Sabina Yeasmin.

“We are investigating the cause of the accident. Legal procedures, including filing a case, are underway,” she added.

Quoting locals and eyewitnesses, Rajshahi University Fire Services and Civil Defence team leader Ariful Islam, said the buses were carrying members and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami from the Ranihati union of Chapainawabganj. They were en route to Bagerhat to visit the historic Sixty Dome Mosque, the Padma Bridge, and the graves of several Jamaat leaders including Delawar Hossain Sayedee.

“The collision occurred when a truck coming from the opposite direction collided head-on with the two buses. One of the buses veered off the road and plunged into a roadside ditch, while the other bus and the truck were severely damaged and remained on the highway,” he added.
