3 risky markets closed in Sylhet after quake

Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) has shut down three markets for 10 days as those were detected as risky due to as tremor jolted the district various times on Saturday.

A team of SCC, led by Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, closed the vulnerable markets around 3:30pm on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the city corporation published a list of 24 risky buildings.

The closed markets are Madhuban Super Market, Mitali Mansion and City Corporation-run super market.

While visiting, the mayor the closed market will be observed for 10 days. Later, advise will be given for necessary renovation to avoid the risk.

A mild earthquake measuring 2.8 was felt in different parts of Sylhet city early hours of Sunday.

The quake jolted the city at about 4:35am, Iqbal Hossain, an official of the Sylhet Meteorological Office, confirmed.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the bordering area of the district.

On Saturday, five tremors were felt in the Sylhet from 10:36-2pm.

The five times tremor in this region in a day made a history for the first time in the country.
