Thanks to her father, the badminton legend Prakash Padukone, Deepika Padukone was very much into the sport during her growing up years. The actress recently featured in Nat Geo’s Mega Icons, wherein she spoke about receiving special treatment at school for being the daughter of Mr Padukone and following in her father’s footsteps. The show charted her journey from being a badminton player to becoming a Bollywood star.

Talking about the VIP treatment she received at school, Deepika revealed how teachers would tell her, ‘We would have punished you but we are big fans of your father.’

Deepika had an extremely tight schedule even during her school days. From dawn to dusk, she had several commitments, of which badminton was a major part. Sharing her routine, the actress said, “The routine was to wake up every morning like 4-5am, go for physical conditioning, go back home, go to school. As soon as I would finish school, there was no time to chitchat with friends so I would get home, change, have a snack, go to the badminton court, have dinner, be exhausted by that point and go to sleep and then the same thing again.”

Deepika added that she had no time for late nights, TV or movies. She added that sport teaches one sacrifice, discipline, dedication and determination. However, the actress left it all once she travelled to Copenhagen all by herself at the age of 16. She then went on to pursue modelling, and by the time she was 17, she had reached Mumbai with a suitcase with a desire to make a career in showbiz.

Deepika made her Bollywood debut in the year 2007 with Om Shanti Om opposite Shah Rukh Khan. She faced numerous flops in the subsequent years but after going through the grind, she is currently one of the biggest actresses of Bollywood. She was last seen in Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak, which released earlier this year. The film had flopped at the box office.
