A court in Dhaka set October 12 to pronounce its verdict against expelled Jubo Mohila League leader Shamima Noor Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman Sumon in an arms case.

After presenting arguments of the prosecution and the defence on Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayesh fixed the date.

Public prosecutor Abdullah Abu said, “We have proved the charges that brought against the couple. Hope that, the accused will be given life term sentence.”

Meanwhile, the defence lawyers said the state counsel failed to prove the charges. Papia and her husband will be acquitted.

On February 22, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the couple from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka with seven passports, Tk 2,12,270, fake of Tk 25,600, 11,481 dollar, some currency notes of Srilanka and India.

The elite force member seized around Tk 58 lakh in cash raiding the couple’s two flats at Dhaka’s Indira Road area and a presidential suite at a five-star hotel.

One case was filed under the Arms Act with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, one under the Special Powers Act and another under the Special Powers Act with the Airport Police Station.
