Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that the ‘illegal’ Awami League government has turned the independent Bangladesh into a horrific uncivilised country where none–irrespective of women, children and disabled–is safe.

“There is no morality in the country. Our society has turned into an uncivilised society where morality no longer exists, justice doesn’t exist, and freedom of law doesn’t exist,” he said while speaking at a human-chain formed in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Friday.

Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal formed the human chain protesting against the increasing number of rapes and incidents of repression on women across the country.

Fakhrul observed that the Awami League government has turned the society into an uncivilised one where women and girls have no safety and security.

“The present Awami League government is fully responsible for such a painful and disgraceful situation in the society. This government has not come to power through the mandate of people. It came to power through a voter-less election. It is now trying to remain in power applying forces, using administration and law enforcers,” the BNP leader said.

Mirza Fakhrul alleged that politicians, journalists and lawyers cannot express their opinion freely in Bangladesh. Even, the Ministry of Education has issued a circular that students would not be able to make any comment on social media that tarnishes the image of the government. “It indicates how the government wants to control students, juveniles and youths of the country,” he said.

The BNP leader said: “People of Bangladesh wanted to live in a free society. They struggled to live in a free environment sacrificing their lives. But, we didn’t want to see this Bangladesh. We wanted a democratic Bangladesh. We wanted a country where people would have freedom of speech, freedom of expressing their own opinion and freedom of exercising their democratic rights.”

“But this government has destroyed the democracy and forcible taken away the rights of people. The basic right of a human being, a woman and a child is to remain alive. But the government has deprived them of that right,” he said.

He called upon all the opposition political parties to be united and wage movement to end the “misrule of the government.”

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that the Awami League government had created anarchies in the country. “They have introduced reign of terror in the country,” Rizvi said.

He demanded of the government to step down immediately and hold a free and fair general election under a caretaker government.

Presided over by Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal president Afroza Abbas, general secretary Helen Zerin Khan, among others, spoke at the human chain.
