The World Egg Day, which was first established at the International Egg Commission Vienna conference in 1996, is observed annually on the second Friday of October. This year, it will be observed today. The World Egg Day aims at creating awareness about the nutritional benefits humans can derive by consuming eggs. Read on to know the health benefits of an egg and know if it is an ideal food for weight loss.

Health benefits of eggs

An egg contains Vitamin A, Folates, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B2, Phosphorus, and Selenium. Eggs also consist of other essential nutrients like Vitamin D, K, E, B6, calcium, zinc, and choline. And the list of goodness doesn’t end here. Eggs are also rich in antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. Small wonder that an egg is referred to as a ‘superfood’.

Eggs have been a part of many people’s diet for centuries. By consuming eggs regularly, a person can reap a myriad of health benefits.

  1. Eggs help in building stronger bones and muscles.
  2. The choline in eggs helps in building cell membranes and in the generation of signaling molecules in the brain.
  3. Antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin in eggs are good for eye health.
  4. Regular consumption of eggs produces good cholesterol which in turn reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
  5. And last but not least, eggs also help in losing weight.

Know how eggs aid in burning excess fat and how many eggs you must eat in a day

  1. Eggs are low in calories but dense in vital nutrients. They nourish your body and keep you full for a long time, thereby reducing frequent hunger pangs.
  2. The protein content in the eggs boosts metabolism.
  3. The egg yolk (yellow portion) is a rich source of Vitamin D. Studies suggest that this vital nutrient helps in burning excess fat deposited in the body. And since the belly is prone to the deposition of fat, eggs help in flattening the stomach.
  4. Since eggs are low in calories, a person who wishes to lose weight can consume one or two eggs per day.
