Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has launched a manhunt to arrest the prime accused and suspended sub-inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan for his involvement in torture of Raihan Uddin Ahmed at Bandarbazar Police Outpost in Sylhet city.

Besides, the PBI has sent letters to all land port and airport  immigration authorities requesting them taking necessary steps so that absconding accused SI Akbar cannot flee the country in any way.

It was disclosed by PBI chief DIG Banaj Kumar Majumder while addressing a press briefing at PBI’s head office in the city’s Dhanmondi on Thursday.

DIG Banaj Kumar said the PBI received the documents of the incident at the Bandarbazar Police Outpost in Sylhet on Tuesday night. A PBI team from Sylhet was present at the spot for three to four hours. “We have started the investigation. At the initial stage of the investigation, we felt that it was very important to catch the suspended SI Akbar.”

“We have informed all the immigration authorities not to allow SI Akbar to flee the country,” he said. “The Home Ministry has also informed different immigration offices at the border. We have kept a team standby to nab him.”

DIG Banaj Kumar Majumder further said, “IGP Sir has always told us not to ruin the reputation you have gained during Coronavirus. Akbar has ruined the reputation of the army by committing these misdeeds. He didn’t think about us, so we don’t have a chance to think about him.”

Asked about the causes of the murder, he said, “We are investigating the matter. Not everything can be said in a day.”

Meanwhile, the body of Raihan Uddin Ahmed, who was tortured to death at the Bandarbazar Police Outpost in Sylhet city, was exhumed for autopsy again on Thursday. The body was taken out from the Panchayat Graveyard of Nawabi Masjid at  Akhalia at about 9 am on Thursday. The body was exhumed in presence of a PBI team led by district administration executive magistrates Misbah Uddin and Sajib Ahmed. The body was later sent to the Forensic Medicine Department morgue at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College for autopsy.
