The much-talked-about coordinated public transport system will be launched on experimental basis from April 1 next.

It was disclosed by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh following a meeting of the Bus Route Rationalisation Committee at Nagar Bhaban of the DSCC in the capital on Tuesday.

The DSCC Mayor said initially the coordinated transport system would be launched from Ghatarchar in Mohammadpur to some parts of Motijheel.

Initially, 165 buses will ply on Ghatarchar-Motijheel route. The bus owners will sign a joint venture agreement to form a company before the next meeting.

Taposh also expressed the hope that launching the new coordinated public transport system would help resolve traffic congestion in the capital and bring discipline in the sector.

All the public transports now plying on 42 routes in the capital would be brought under 22 companies.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam was present at the meeting.

DMP Commissioner Shafiqul Islam, BRTA Chairman Noor Mohammad Mazumder, BRTC Chairman Ehsan-e-Elahi, Bus Route Rationalisation Committee’s member secretary and DTCA executive director Khondker Raqibur Rahman, DNCC’s Traffic Engineering Circle’s superintending engineer Arifur Rahman, public transport expert Dr SM Saleh Uddin, Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity’s secretary general Khondker Enayet Ullah, Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity’s president Azmal Uddin Ahmad, organising secretary Advocate Mahbubur Rahman, among others, were present.
