Varun Dhawan is all set to entertain the audience with his next release Coolie No 1. The movie not only marks his reunion with father David Dhawan after the success of Main Tera Hero and Judwaa 2 but also is a remake of the 1995 Govinda starrer of the same name.

Including Coolie No 1, David Dhawan’s last two films have been remakes of his own successful films of the ’90s. However, Varun Dhawan feels Coolie No 1 will be the last remake his father has helmed.

Sharing the details about remaking the 1995 cult hit, Varun stated that initially he wasn’t keen on doing the film. He told Mumbai Mirror,

It was Vashu sir (Producer, Vashu Bhagnani), Jackky (Bhagnani) and my father’s (David Dhawan) decision to remake the film. I was initially hesitant, but when I watched the film again, I thought the idea of Raju coolie crossing all limits to win his love is still relevant. No one can match the original; ours has been done keeping in mind today’s youngsters, who have not seen the earlier film.

When mentioned that there were rumours that they were thinking of remaking either Coolie No 1 or Biwi No 1, Varun replied,

There were a couple of original scripts too which my father had worked on. This is his 45th directorial. He was convinced it would be best to remake Coolie No 1 and I just went along. But I feel, given his age, this will be the last remake for him. He has always been a man of conviction, driven by an instinct for what the audience wants, and he has got it right more than anyone else. I don’t think any of us are in a position to give him advice.

When asked if we will get to see him in future No. 1 films as well a la Govinda, Varun responded with in negative,

No, the No 1 franchise will always be known for the Govinda-David Dhawan-Karisma Kapoor trio. This is a one-off film, we don’t intend to spin it into a franchise. But we will continue making comedies. It’s a genre that needs to be kept alive, everyone needs a two-hour laughter break with their families. Even doctors advise you to laugh.
