‘Covid-19 came as govt had no capacity of quarantining so many passengers’

State Minister for Relief and Disaster Management Dr Md Enamur Rahman has said more than six lakh passengers arrived in Bangladesh in three months from different countries of the world at the beginning of coronavirus pandemic.

“The government had not the capability of keeping so many passengers in quarantine and feeding them. Coronavirus infection had spread in Bangladesh through these passengers,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion on ‘Global Pandemic and Role of Youths to Prevent Social Disasters’ organised by BRAC Humanitarian Programme at CIRDAP Auditorium in the capital on Sunday.

Enamur Rahman said, “The Bangladesh government is now a role model in disaster management. We were confined to relief distribution earlier, but now we are working to mitigate risks.”

He pledged to the youths to raise investment for their welfare.

Besides, he would take steps to make the existing security app 999 easier and better.

Claiming that Bangladesh is now in a better position to deal with coronavirus pandemic that the United States, Europe, India and Pakistan, the state minister said research reveals that Bangladesh is now the 20th state in pandemic management. “Rates of coronavirus infection and death are much low compared to the number of population,” he said.

Assistant Professor Towhidul Huque of the Department of Social Welfare and Research Council of Dhaka University, commentator Sathira Jakir Jessy, and BRAC Humanitarian Programme’s Director Sajedul Hasan also addressed the discussion.
