Awami League presidium member and former Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan may appear as a threat to the life of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

He made the remark while speaking at a protest rally at the Jatiya Press Club premises in the capital on Wednesday.

Dhaka City North and South BNP organised the rally in protest against stripping of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman’s ‘Bir Uttam’ gallantry title.

Addressing the prime minister, Rizvi said: “You (Prime Minister) must be prepared. Shajahan Khan may appear as a threat to your life.”

He said: “If any changes happen, we don’t know what would be their role, because this Shajahan Khan had killed Awami League leaders and workers targetting them from 1972 to 1975. He was a leader of Ganabahini, the armed wing of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD). He was also a leader of JSD. Ganabahini killed many Awami League leaders and waged violent insurgency against the government of Bangabandhu after the independence.”

The BNP spokesman said, “A person who doesn’t know how to behave with others, and doesn’t have integrity of character, it is obvious that he would strip Ziaur Rahman’s of his title. A dacoit doesn’t have human qualities.”

Rizvi said the name of valiant freedom-fighter Ziaur Rahman is in the blood of people. A dacoit like Shajahan Khan wants to strip the title of a courageous leader like Ziaur Rahman.

The BNP leader said: “Perhaps, you can recall that when a bus crash pedestrians to death, Shajahan Khan thinks it is not unlawful. Buses crash children on the roads , but Shajahan Khan says that it’s nothing.”

He said Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia is a noted lawyer. At a talk-show on television, Shajahan Khan threatened to gouge out his eyes. “If a person utters to gouge out eyes, and beat, he is nothing but a dacoit, mafia and terrorist,” he said.

Rizvi said Ziaur Rahman’s name is inscribed in the hearts of all. People will never forget his historic contributions though several terrorists and mafias take initiatives to erase his name.
