The family of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has submitted an application to the Ministry of Home Affairs seeking extention of the tenure of her release for the third time.

The application was handed over to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal at his secretariat office on Tuesday afternoon. Khaleda Zia’s brother Shamim Iskander signed the application on behalf of her.

When his attention was drawn to the application, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told journalists that an application was handed  to him by Khaleda Zia’s brother Shamim Iskander seeking extention of the tenure of her release for the third time. They also requested for relaxing the conditions. “The prayer has been sent to the official concerned of the ministry for examination,” he said.

“The government will give its decision consulting with the Law Ministry,” he said.

Khaleda Zia’s family also urged the government to allow the ailing former premier to go abroad for better treatment extending the tenure of her release for the third time on the grounds of her age, illness, and humanitarian grounds.

The tenure of the extension of her release for the second time is going to expire on March 25 next.

The 76-year-old former prime minister Khaleda Zis is now staying at her Gulshan’s rented house ‘Firoza.’  She has been suffering from artheritis pain, diabetes, eyesight problems and other old-age complications.

In February 2018, Khaleda was jailed for a total of 17 years for the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case and Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. She was found guilty of embezzling funds for the orphanage trusts set up while she had been serving as the prime minister. She was transferred to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) for medical treatment in April 2019. In March 2020, she was released for six months on humanitarian grounds with the conditions that she would stay at her home in Gulshan, Dhaka and would not leave the country.
