Mukul Roy, who had joined the BJP with much fanfare, returned to Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Friday.

He was felicitated by TMC MP and Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee at the TMC headquarters, reported India Today and India Business Standard newspapers.

The party also welcomed Mukul Roy’s son, Subhranshu Roy, who had too joined the BJP after the 2019 Lok Sabha election, to the party.

Welcoming Mukul Roy to the party, Mamata Banerjee said, ” He has returned to our family. We welcome him. He will play an important role in the party.”

After Mukul Roy quit TMC in 2017, he was appointed the BJP national vice president in the run-up to the Bengal assembly elections.

But Mukul was said to be uncomfortable within the Bengal BJP. He apparently did not get well with Dilip Ghosh even though the central BJP leadership kept him in good stead.

Expressing happiness over quitting BJP and returning to TMC, Mukul Roy said, “I am happy to see this room. Feels elated to leave BJP’s shadow and return here. Bengal will return to its heights and our leader, Mamata, will lead from the front.”

On being asked why he left BJP and came back to TMC, he said, “I will issue a statement about why I left BJP, but I could not and cannot be in BJP, hence I came back. In the present circumstances in Bengal, no one will stay in BJP.”

Taking a dig at the BJP, the TMC supremo said that Roy was being threatened and harrassed.

“Our party is strong. He was threatened and harrassed and I could see his health deteriorate. One cannot be a member of BJP,” Mamata Banerjee said.

Mukul Roy, the former lieutenant of Mamata Banerjee, had left the TMC over alleged disagreements with the party’s top leadership on multiple issues, including differences with Abhishek Banerjee.

“I never had an issue with Abhishek,” Mukul Roy said.
