No scope to defer Sylhet-3 by-polls: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has said there is no scope to defer by-election to Sylhet-3 constituency due to legal and constitutional obligations.

He said all the activities related to the by-election scheduled to be held on July 28 next will remain out of the purview of coronavirus restrictions.

The CEC was speaking at a meeting related to law and order on the occasion of by-election at the office of Sylhet deputy commissioner’s office on Saturday (July 24).

KM Nurul Huda called upon the voters to arrive at the polling centres wearing face masks and maintaining safe distance in the present coronavirus pandemic situation.

He said the administration will be very strict to ensure free and fair election maintaining health guidelines. Voting will be conducted through the electronic voting machines (EVMs) at all centres in Sylhet-3 cosntituency.

With M Kazi Emdadul Islam, deputy commissioner of Sylhet, who will also be the returning officer of the by-election to Sylhet-3 constituency, the meeting was attended by Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury and other officials concerned of the Election Commission and administration.

Earlier. CEC Nurul Huda and EC Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury reached Sylhet on Saturday morning to attend the meeting.

Sylhet-3 constituency, comprising Balaganj, Dakshin Surma, and Fenchuganj upazilas, fell vacant following the death of Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury Koyes MP of the Awami League from coronavirus on March 11 last.
