Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Monday said constant criticism of the government has now become BNP’s only political programme.
“When almost all political parties of the world are doing politics together for protecting the lives of the people from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, at that time the BNP is busy with spreading venom of criticism against the government,” he said in a statement.
Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, issued the statement in response to a statement given by BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
The AL general secretary said at the present situation, political parties are working shoulder to shoulder for the welfare of the people in almost all countries, many of which once witnessed severe rivalry between the ruling parties and the oppositions.
Quader said under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the government is working hard for saving the lives and livelihood of the people from the lethal virus.
But at that time, he said, BNP is deliberately making false and fabricated statements every day, increasing the plight of the people.
Quader said the only aim of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government is to ensure the people’s welfare, not to establish any kind of supremacy.
“The Awami League believes in people’s empowerment and always respects them,” he said.
The AL general secretary said since the birth of BNP, the party not only grabbed power illegally, but also established the undemocratic state system by destroying the spirit of the great Liberation War and democratic values.
“The country’s people know well who wanted to usurp power in an undemocratic and unconstitutional way,” he added.
Quader said the politics of conspiracies, coups and killing got legitimacy by the BNP, while the party held a farcical election on February 15 in 1996 by creating about 1.23 crore fake voters.
Pointing out that BNP has become a party of corrupt people by acknowledging politically its top corrupt leaders, he said the BNP even shamelessly amended its constitution for them.
The AL general secretary said no case is being filed and none is being harassed politically in anywhere of the country. Arresting any accused in specific allegations is a part of the regular activities of the law enforcement agencies, he said.
Quader said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is spreading falsehood deliberately about the normal activities of the law enforcement agencies with political colour.
