State Minister for Labour urges owners not to retrench workers in pandemic

State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian has made special request to owners not to retrench workers or declare lay-off in their factories during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement on Thursday evening, she made the request to the owners and managements of all the industries, mills and factories including RMG and non-RMG.

The statement said the government has imposed strict restrictions to bring the coronavirus transmission under control. All kinds of mills and factories have remained closed under the purview of the restrictions. Terming the coronavirus pandemic as a “disaster” not only for Bangladesh, but also for the entire world, the state minister called upon all to work together for the greater interest of the country and the nation.

Meanwhile, leaders of the country’s apex trade body FBCCI on Thursday called on Cabinet Secretary Khondker Anwarul Islam.

Following the meeting, FBCCI president Md Jasim Uddin said it has become necessary to reopen all kinds of production-oriented industries and factories as early as possible in accordance with the health guidelines. Otherwise, there are risks of cancellation of orders in the export sector. All types of export might seriously be affected and good supply system might be jeopardised.

Besides, he urged the government to bring all the workers and employees involved in export activities under vaccination programme.
