‘No scope of releasing Khaleda Zia permanently’

There is no scope of releasing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia permanently as cases against her are still under trial, said Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Khurshid Alam.

He made the remarks early Wednesday afternoon.

Khurshid Alam said there is no “alternative” to Khaleda Zia to submit prayer to the President seeking release permanently.

Meanwhile, the BNP Chairperson’s counsel Mahbub Uddin Khokon on Wednesday said the government could grant permanent bail to Khaleda Zia if it wanted. “There is no legal barrier here.”

Khaleda Zia’s younger brother Shamim Iskander submitted a prayer to the home ministry several days ago seeking unconditional release of his sister as the suspension of BNP Chairperson’s punishment is going to expire on September 15. The Ministry of Law has already given its opinion on the prayer. In that context, the ACC and Khaleda’s lawyers made the remarks on Wednesday.

The BNP Chairperson went to jail on February 8, 2018 being convicted in corruption cases. On March 25 last year, she was released for six months by the government on an executive order.
