Family dramas have always had an upper hand over other genres in Bollywood. Over the years in the film industry, we have witnessed people thronging cinema halls whenever a family entertainer is released. There have been many instances where theatres have witnessed major footfalls because of movies that attract family audiences.
While some family entertainers bore audiences because they are high on emotions, the rest strike the right chord with the masses because they balance everything in equal parts. And filmmaker Abhishek Jain’s film, Hum Do Hamare Do, is one such which has humour, drama and sentiments in equal parts.
Set in Chandigarh, Hum Do Hamare Do isn’t a usual love story that we have seen in the recent past. The film revolves around the lives of Dhruv (Rajkummar Rao) and Anya (Kriti Sanon). The film begins with an introduction to Dhruv’s childhood, wherein it is highlighted that he works at a highway dhaba, run by Purushottam Mishra (Paresh Rawal).
A few minutes into the film, we are introduced to all grown-up Dhruv, who successfully runs a start-up. His first meeting with Anya happens to be at the promotional event of his newly launched app. Anya mistakes Dhruv for a magician and that’s exactly when their conversation begins. After clearing the air about his profession, Dhruv gives a rather cold reaction to Anya’s simple request. But destiny has different plans for them.
Although Anya initially Dhruv to be rude, her opinion about him changes as they gradually start spending time with each other. Needless to add, Dhruv falls head over heels in love with Anya and proposes to her in an unusual way. However, trouble arises when Dhruv learns that Anya wants to marry a guy, who has a family and a pet dog. In order to get married to Anya, Dhruv thinks of ‘adopting’ parents. And that’s exactly when the film goes through major twists and turns.
Performance-wise, Rajkummar plays his part perfectly in the film. The actor’s humour is on-point at various intervals in the movie. On the other hand, it is refreshing to see Kriti play a girl-next-door kind-of character after Mimi. As far as Ratna Pathak Shah and Paresh Rawal are concerned, they do justice to their characters.
While a majority of the things about the film seem fine, a few parts of the film seem a bit stretched. The scene where we witness a possible love angle of character could have been cut short to make the movie even crisp.
Overall, Hum Do Hamare Do is a one-time popcorn entertainer that you can enjoy with your family this Diwali.
