From erectile dysfunction to homophobia and now transphobia, actor Ayushmann Khurrana is known for picking up sensitive subjects. In his recently released romantic drama, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, the actor plays a heterosexual man who falls in love with a transgender woman. But, the actor says doing these films has its own challenges. For Ayushmann, bringing the audience to the theatres to watch films on such taboo subjects is the most difficult task, he says.
In an interview with Zoom Digital, the actor opened up about the same and also spoke about how the audience reacted to his previous film – Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan – where he played a homosexual man. “A lot of people from the smaller cities didn’t go for the film because they were like do ladke kiss karrahe hai, hum nahi dekhenge, aisi film hum nahi dekhte hai. They are so regressive. They’re homophobic, they’re transphobic, we are catering to those kind of people,” he said.
Talking about his recent release Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui‘s storyline, he revealed, “That’s why we were thinking how to get the trailer which just shows like a rom-com but doesn’t tell you about the subject. So, it doesn’t get difficult to get the audience for these kinds of films.”

“It’s so difficult in our country. Though I have done films like, on erectile dysfunction, then on homophobia and then this (Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui) on transphobia, I guess in these kinds of films it’s always difficult to get the audience and that’s the biggest challenge,” he reiterated.
