Independent candidate in Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) election Taimur Alam Khondker has said he lost the election due to “rigging by administration and EVMs.”

The BNP leader who had expected to defeat Selina Hayat Ivy by over one lakh votes in the NCC election.

Addressing a press conference at his Masdair residence in Narayanganj city on Sunday night, he said, “I had to play games with the government taking part in the election. I got defeated due to administrative engineering and EVM rigging. I don’t consider it as a defeat. I thank people and media.”

Taimur said voters’ presence was spontaneous. But, they could not cast their ballots. EVMs were slow. “Some engineering took place through these EVMs, otherwise, there couldn’t be such a wide difference in results.”

He termed the election as “a game between government versus people, and ‘government versus Taimur Alam Khondker.”

Taimur alleged that the behaviours of the Election Commission, local administration and police administration were “very risky” for him in the NCC election. “It has been proved. I have been saying since the morning that EVMs are faulty and slow. Somewhere these machine became hanged and non-functioning.”

Alleging harassment and arrest, he said those who were engaged in the election campaigns for him, they were arrested by law enforcers just before the election. “Arrest of my people started since the arrival of Awami League leaders here in Narayanganj. In such a situation, how an independent candidate can sustain,” he asked.
