Nine more ‘drug traders’ killed in ‘gunfights’

At least nine suspected drug peddlers were killed in separate incidents of “gunfight” with law enforcers in different districts on Monday as the anti-drug crackdown continues across the country.

At least 100 suspected drug peddlers were killed in “gunfights” across the country since the anti-narcotics drive of the law enforcers was started on May 12.

In Dhaka, an unidentified man was killed in a “gunfight” with the members of Detectives Branch (DB) of police in Rupnagar area of the capital early Monday.

Confirming the information, Rupnagar Police Station Sub Inspector Mizanur Rahman said: “Tipped-off, a team of BD police conducted a drive to capture drug traders in the area. Sensing law enforcers’ presence, drug smugglers opened fire at them, prompting retaliation that triggered a gunfight.”

“At one stage of the incident, the body of the man was found on the spot. Police also recovered one pistol and 5000 pieces of Yaba pills,” he added.

In Chandpur, a suspected drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Gupti village under Faridganj upazila on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Lal Badsha, son of late Abdur Rashid of Purbo Gobindopur village under Faridganj upazila of the district.

Faridganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shah Alam confirmed the news to the journalists.

Police said that Lal Badsha was accused in 10 cases filed over different allegations with several police stations.

In Jhenaidah, a suspected drug trader was killed in a “gunfight” between two groups of drug smugglers in Jargram area of Sadar upazila of the district early today.

Details about the deceased could not be known immediately.

Confirming the information, Jhenaidah Police Station Officer-in-Charge Emdadul Haq Sheikh said: “A team of police rushed to Jargram after hearing the sounds of exchanging fire. Police recovered the body of an unidentified man after the gunfight from the spot.”

Police claimed to recover a pistol, two round of bullets, 20 bottles of Phensedyl and 1 kilogram of hemp from the spot.

In Cumilla, two suspected drug traders were killed in separate incidents of gunfights in Sadar Dakhshin and Debidwar upazilas this morning.

Enamul Haque Dolon, 35, son of late Abdullah Bhuiyan Alias Babul Miah of Bhinglabari area, was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Bhinglabari Beribadh area of Debidwar upazila.

Police claimed to recover 10kg hemp, 100 Yaba tablets, one pipe gun and a cartridge from the spot.

Besides, Nuru Miah, 55, son of late Abdul Ohab of Kalikapur area of Sadar Dakhshin upazila, was killed in another gunfight with police in Goliyarai area.

In Pirojpur, a suspected drug trader, Wahiduzzaman Ohid, 50, hailing from Nesarabad upazila, accused in eight drug cases, was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Kourikhara village of Sadar upazila around 2am.

Confirming the information, Pirojpur Additional Superintendent GM Abul Kalam Azad said: “Police recovered one pipe gun, 175 Yaba tablets, 50gm hemp and four cartridges from the spot. The deceased was an accused in six cases.”

In Natore, a suspected drug trader, Khalekuddin,was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Baghnagarkandi in Singra upazila around 2am.

Two Rab men were injured in the incident.

In Satkhira, police recovered bullet-riddled bodies of two suspected drug traders from Bankal-Agunpur area at Alipur union in Sadar upazila around 7am.

Of them, one deceased was identified as Khalilur Rahman Puti, 35, son of Azgar Ali, of Bhomra village.

Prabir Kumar Das, sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station, said: “On information, a team of police recovered the bodies from the area. We also recovered a one shooter gun, one bullet, a bottle of liquor and 105 bottles of Phensidyl.”
