Woman journalist found dead at Hazaribagh flat

Police on Wednesday recovered the hanging body of a female journalist from Rayer Bazar area in the capital.

The body of Sohana Parveen Tuli was recovered at about 5:00pm by Hazaribagh police from a room on the first floor of a six storeyed building at Sher-e-Bangla Road in Rayer Bazar.

“Sohana Parveen Tuli worked at different news outlets more than a decade. She finally worked at Bangla Tribune, an online news outlet. However, she got unemployed several months ago after being sacked and had been suffering from frustration since then. She was also a member of Dhaka Union of Journalists and Sub Editors Council,” said her relatives.

Though Sohana was married, she got divorced several years ago. She used to stay at her rented flat most of the time of the day, it is learnt.

Sohana Tuli was a former student at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Dhaka University. She worked at several news outlets including Bangla Tribune, Kaler Kantho and Amader Shomoy.

Hazaribagh Police Station officer in-charge (OC) Md Moktaruzzaman said Sohana Tuli lived at a flat on the first floor at 299/5 Sher-e-Bangla Road in Rayer Bazar. Her brother Mohaiminul used to go there occasionally.

Tuli hailed from Battala area under Jashore Sadar Police Station. She had been living at the Hazaribagh flat since December 2018.

On Wednesday afternoon, Mohaiminul did not get any response of his sister despite repeated phone calls. He later informed police.

On information, police went to the flat and recovered the body.

“In presence of police, Tuli’s brother broke the doors of the flat. Entering the flat, we found she was hanging tying a scarf around her neck with a ceiling fan inside the room,” OC Moktaruzzaman said.

Later, the body was sent to Shahid Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for postmortem. The Crime Scene of police collected evidence from the place of occurrence.
