Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal on Sunday suggested contestants in elections to stand with rifles if someone stands with a sword.

The CEC came up with the remark during the first meeting of its scheduled dialogue with registered political parties.

The first meeting was held with the Nationalist Democratic Movement at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka.

The CEC said the Election Commission cannot stop violence during the polls and called on the political parties to take responsibility.

Suggesting parities to go to the field, and play, he said, “We are referees. We have many powers.”

Following the CEC’s remarks, NDM chairman Bobby Hajjaz said the law does not permit them to stand with shotguns.
