Remand of 4 suspects arrested in Tipu-Preeti murder sought

The Detective Branch (DB) on Sunday (July 31) pleaded to a court in Dhaka to place four suspects, arrested in connection with Motijheel Thana Awami League’s former general secretary Zahidul Islam Tipu and college girl Samia Afnan Preeti murder, on a five-day remand.
Harun-ar-Rashid, additional commissioner of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said they were arrested from different areas in the capital.
The arrested were former joint convener of Motijheel Thana Chhatra League Mahbubur Rahman Titu, Jubayer Alam Khan Robin, Motijheel Thana Chhatra League’s former president Arifur Rahman Sohel and Khairul Islam.
With them, at least 18 persons have, so far, been arrested in the double murder case.
They have been arrested on the basis of information provided by Tipu murder case’s chief coordinator Sumon Sikder alias Killer Musa.
At night of March 24 last, the 54-year-old Zahidul Islam Tipu was shot dead at Shahajahanpur Amtala Masjid area in the capital. At that time, he was going to his Bagicha residence.
During the indiscriminate firing, a college student Samia Afnan Preeti who was on board a rickshaw besides Tipu’s car, also received bullet injuries. Tipu’s driver Munna also received bullet wounds.
Both Tipu and Samia were pronounced dead after they were taken to a hospital.
Following Tipu’s death, his wife, ward councillor Farzana Islam Dolly, filed a case with the police station concerned without naming the accused.
The investigation report of the case is scheduled to be submitted to the court on August 31 next.
One of the prime suspects of the murder case, Sumon Sikder Musa was brought back to the country following his arrest in Oman on May 12 last.
