Bangladesh Bank has identified 10 weak banks and the central bank planned to strengthen its monitoring over all the banks in the country, said Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder on Thursday.

He was addressing a ‘Meet the Press’ at the Jahangir Alam conference room of the central bank in Dhaka on Thursday.

However, he declined to disclose the names of the banks.

“I don’t want to reveal the names of weak banks. However, the names have already been published in newspapers. Our objective is to strengthen the banks financially. During our talks with the authorities concerned of the first (National Bank Ltd) of 10 weak banks, we called for allowing the managing director to work independently,” he said.

The governor said the weak banks will receive a three-year business plan for improvement under direct observation of Bangladesh Bank.

Abdur Rouf Talukder said banks must comply with rules in debt management and other activities.

He assured that the central bank will ensure good governance in the banking sector.

The governor said the 10 weak banks were rated based on four factors – classified loans, capital adequacy, loan-deposit ratio and amount of provisioning.
