Sylhet City Mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury today said BNP will not participate in the upcoming city corporation elections but will respect the aspirations of the people of Sylhet.

He made this remark while talking to the journalists in Sylhet city this afternoon after a 14-day visit to the UK ahead of Sylhet City Corporation elections slated for June 21.

The mayor said that he will make his position on running clear within a week.

“I will discuss with the people of Sylhet and the party leaders, understand the environment and the situation and will inform my official decision within a week,” said Ariful.

Ariful landed in Sylhet Osmani International Airport around 2:30pm. Thousands of people from the BNP and its affiliated organisations welcomed him.

Ariful, also BNP central committee member, went to London on April 2, where he had a meeting with the party’s acting chairperson Tarique Rahman.

He claimed that Tarique gave him a signal later on and he would reveal it later.

According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, the deadline for submitting nominations is May 23 and the last date for withdrawal is June 1.
