Rain inundates many Dhaka roads, causing severe traffic disruptions
Roads in many areas of Dhaka have been waterlogged due to the rain that started early hours of today, causing significant hardship for those heading to works and schools.
Many streets are submerged in knee-deep water, with some areas experiencing water up to the waist.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) recorded 80mm of rain in Dhaka between 6:00am and 9:00am and 22mm between 12:00am and 6:00am.
Due to heavy morning shower in Dhaka, residents and commuters faced severe challenges as the city struggled to cope with the downpour.
A resident of the Mirpur-10 area said that he attempted to go to his office in Karwan Bazar by rickshaw around 7:00am. However, the entire route from Mirpur-10 to Shewrapara was flooded. At one point, the rickshaw seat was submerged, forcing him to abandon the trip and return home.
The situation has caused massive traffic jams across the city, with various vehicles stuck in waterlogged streets. CNG-run auto-rickshaws were particularly affected, with many failing to start due to water entering their engines.
Office-goers, students, and others on their way to daily activities have been left stranded, waiting for hours as traffic comes to a standstill.
Posts in the Facebook group Traffic Alert indicate that multiple roads in Mirpur, Bashundhara R/A, Dhanmondi, Green Road, and Banani are currently waterlogged, exacerbating the traffic chaos.
Afruza Sultana, an assistant meteorologist at BMD, reported that Nikli in Kishoreganj recorded 62mm of rain between 12:00am and 6:00am.
In the last 24 hours, Cumilla and Rangamati each recorded 62mm of rain, while Chattogram saw 8mm, Chandpur 35mm, and Maizdi in Noakhali 31mm.
