Hartal lost appeal, no longer effective: Quader

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said general strikes have lost its appeal as people nowadays are not responding to such programmes.

He said: “Programmes like hartals are no longer effective as the common people are not interested in taking to the street to realise their demands.”

The minister made the remarks today while addressing a press briefing after a presidium meeting of the ruling Awami League at its office.

Regarding the half-day hartal called by the left-leaning political alliance for today, he said: “The decision of hiking the gas price is realistic. We have no other way as despite the rise the authorities have to give subsidy in the sector
