Anne Hathaway is all set to play the leading star in the forthcoming book-to-film adaptation of “Verity,” the best-selling book authored by Colleen Hoover.

She will portray Verity Crawford, a renowned author left severely injured and unable to complete her thriller novel after a devastating car accident. In her stead, Verity’s husband, Jeremy, hires Lowen, a struggling writer, offering a substantial sum to finish the remaining books in the series.

Lowen accepts the offer but soon discovers disturbing secrets, including an unfinished manuscript that reveals chilling confessions about Verity and her family’s past. This leaves Lowen questioning whether Verity is a brilliant storyteller or a disturbed psychopath. The casting for Jeremy and Lowen has not yet been finalised.

Michael Showalter, known for collaborating with Hathaway on this year’s romantic comedy “The Idea of You”, is set to direct the upcoming film for Amazon MGM, which will have a theatrical release. The screenplay was penned by Nick Antosca, following earlier drafts by Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, and the duo Will Honley & April Maguire.

Hathaway, Hoover, and Showalter will produce the film through their respective production companies: Somewhere Pictures, Heartbones Entertainment, and Semi-Formal Productions. Additional producers include Nick Antosca from Eat the Cat, Jordana Mollick from Semi-Formal, and Stacey Sher of Shiny Penny. Lauren Levine from Heartbones Entertainment will serve as executive producer. Verity is part of Semi-Formal Productions’ first-look film agreement with Amazon MGM.

Originally self-published in 2018, “Verity” quickly became a literary phenomenon, remaining on the New York Times best-sellers list for months and selling over a million copies in 2023 alone. The book is characterised as a “gothic, psychosexual thriller,” drawing comparisons to “Rebecca” and “Gone Girl”.

Anne Hathaway’s upcoming projects include “Mother’s Instinct” alongside Jessica Chastain, David Lowery’s melodrama “Mother Mary”, and the sci-fi feature “Flowervale Street”. She is also slated to return as Mia Thermopolis in Disney’s “The Princess Diaries 3”, reprising her role as the princess of Genovia. The Oscar-winning actress is widely recognised for her performances in “The Devil Wears Prada”, “Les Misérables”, “Ella Enchanted”, “The Dark Knight Rises”, and “Ocean’s Eight”.
