‘Priyo Maloti’ receives standing ovation at first local screening
Mehazabien Chowdhury’s much-anticipated silver screen debut film, “Priyo Maloti”, directed by Shankha Dasgupta, received a rousing reception during its first screening at Star Cineplex’s Panthapath branch in Dhaka today.
The screening, which began at 11:20am, concluded at 1:30pm with thunderous applause and a standing ovation for the cast and crew.
The film, which is being screened in over 20 cinemas across the country, highlights the struggles of Maloti—a character representing social, economic, and emotional hardships faced by many women in society. Drawing inspiration from true events, the story also challenges societal norms, making it both thought-provoking and deeply relatable.
Mehazabien Chowdhury, along with director Shankha Dasgupta, producer Adnan Al Rajeev, and other team members, attended the first show to connect with the audience.
The screening was fully booked, with viewers of all ages present to witness this emotional tale.
Following the screening, audience members shared overwhelmingly positive feedback. Many praised the storytelling and direction, with some leaving the theatre in tears. “The film moved me to my core,” one viewer commented, highlighting how it addressed societal issues with authenticity and depth.
Speaking to the media after the screening, Mehazabien expressed her gratitude, stating, “I hoped the film would resonate with the audience, but I didn’t expect everyone to get this emotional. I’m truly grateful to everyone.”
Director Dasgupta, making his cinematic debut with this film, remarked, “This is just the first show. The feedback has been positive so far, and I hope it continues. I urge everyone to come and watch ‘Priyo Maloti’—it tells your story.”
Produced by Frame Per Second and the OTT platform Chorki, “Priyo Maloti” has already made its mark internationally, having been screened at the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) and the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), where it received widespread acclaim.
Despite its local context, the film has been lauded for its universal themes and emotional depth by international audiences.
