Titumir College students block road once again

Students of Government Titumir College once again blocked both sides of the road in front of the college in Mohakhali this afternoon, demanding the college be upgraded to a university along with other demands.

Like yesterday, students have blocked the road in front of Titumir College since 3:00pm today as part of their protest, Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Russell Sarwar, told The Daily Star.

The protesters had lifted the blockade in the early hours of today, but have resumed their programme once more.

As a result, vehicular movement from Mohakhali-Amtoli towards Gulshan-1 and vice versa remains suspended, said the Traffic Gulshan Division in a Facebook post.

In this situation, drivers and passengers traveling from Banani-Kakoli towards Jahangir Gate are requested to use the flyover, it said.

Those heading towards Gulshan-1 from Mohakhali via a right turn at Amtoli are advised to continue straight towards Kakoli/Banani, then take a U-turn at Kakoli Crossing or further ahead to access the Banani/Gulshan-2 roads.

Travellers from Banani/Kakoli towards Amtoli can proceed straight via the Mohakhali Terminal.

Because of the weekend, traffic movement in the area is still normal, police said.

Yesterday, Titumir College students began protesting on the road in front of the college at Mohakhali around 11:30am, creating massive traffic disruption and suffering for people travelling between Mohakhali and Gulshan-1, as well as adjacent areas where the traffic congestion cascaded.

After barricading the road throughout the night, protesters lifted the blockade around 4:00am considering public suffering, said Ali Ahmed, one of the protestors.

This morning, around 20 students were stationed in front of the college gate, with 10 of them on hunger strike, he added.

The students’ demands include seven key points, but their primary focus is the transformation of Titumir College into a full-fledged university.
