Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda today said a peaceful atmosphere is prevailing ahead of the Dhaka north and south city corporation elections slated for February 1.

“A peaceful atmosphere for a free and fair election is prevailing . . . candidates are conducting campaigns without any obstruction,” said the CEC while talking to journalist at Nirbachan Bhaban here.

About BNP’s allegation regarding harassment, he said, “We don’t have any such information.”

Replying to a question, he said the law enforcement agencies will remain vigilant and take actions if any criminal, terrorist or bomber takes shelter here.

The CEC requested people not to come to Dhaka without any reason during the polls, saying that the law enforcement agencies are asked to beef up vigilance and allow no unnecessary gathering outside the polling centres.

About the role of the foreign election observers, Nurul Huda said there is a rule in this regard and the observers will act according to the electoral law.

The CEC also requested voters to leave the polling centres soon after casting votes at their respective centres.
