Affluent youths involved in “Ice” trading, 10 held

Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has detained10 youths from Banani, Uttara, Banasree and Khilgaon in the capital in connection with selling and taking crystal meth, better known as “Ice”, and Yaba tablets.
Additional Director General of DNC Fazlur Rahman said this at a press conference held at its Tejgaon office on Saturday.
The detainees are: Rubaiyat, 32, Md Rohit Hossain, 27, Masum Hannan, 49, Md Aman Ullah, 30, Mohaiminul Islam Evan, 29, Musa Babar, 39, Syeda Anika Zaman, 30, Laila Afroz Priya, 26, Tanjeem Ali Shah and Hasibul Islam, 22.
During the raids, 500 grams of crystal meth and 5,000 pieces of yaba were recovered from the detainees’ possessions.
Fazlur Rahman at press conference said, “Each of the 10-member team was from a wealthy family. Some of them have returned home after completing their higher education abroad. The department conducted the operation from Friday afternoon to 4.00 am on Saturday.”
Department of Narcotics Control will file eight separate cases against the detainees.
The Department says it is possible to make 1 lakh yaba tablets from 500 grams of crystal meth.
According to the Department a group of 7-8 people controls the trade of crystal meth in Dhaka. One of the members of this group was detained recently. The raids were carried out in different parts of Dhaka on the basis of a phone number given by him. The operations were led by the Assistant Director ofDNC Md Mehedi Hasan.
Mehedi Hasan said that after trying for almost a month, he was able to put the team in their net.
“Rubayat, Rohit Hossain and Babar were first detained from Banani. Among them, Rohit has returned from Malaysia after studying Business management. Preliminary inquiries revealed that his father had a market. The three of them are taking and selling drugs g regularly in the rented flat of Musa Babar at Banani,” he added.
Mehedi said the rest were later detained one by one.
