There is a low buzz of excitement going around as theatres gear up to showcase the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on May 6. As per latest reports, Benedict Cumberbatch’s highly anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Of Madness has crossed Rs 10 crore worth of sales prior to its release.
The events of the film, which is the 28th in the MCU and a sequel to the 2016 Doctor Strange takes place a few months after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), and is a direct repercussion from him meddling in the affairs of Peter Parker (but I digress), and needless to say has already started becoming a huge box office draw across the globe. But, is it real cinema?

Martin Scorsese – ‘But that’s not cinema’
Back in 2019, one of cinema’s most celebrated directors, Martin Scorsese decried superhero movies, which, honestly is one of the dominant forces in today’s industry. In an interaction with the Empire magazine, the Taxi Driver director had opened up about his attempts to get up to speed with contemporary superhero flicks and his failure. The director was famously quoted as saying, “I tried, you know?” before going on to say, “But that’s not cinema.”
According to the veritable legend the closest he could think of them, despite them being extremely well made, was that under ‘best circumstances’ they were theme parks. “It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being,” he had famously said. So are flicks under the Marvel banner, like the upcoming Benedict Cumberbatch starrer Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness mere glorified visual content?
