A Dhaka court today ordered former law minister Anisul Huq to be shown arrested and placed former Awami League lawmaker Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin on a three-day remand in separate cases filed over the death of two people during the quota reform movement.

Former law minister Anisul Huq was shown arrested in a case filed over the death of garment worker Md Fazlu in front of Diganta Filling Station in the Bhasantek area during the quota reform movement on August 5 last year.

Meanwhile, Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, a former Awami League lawmaker from Dhaka-10 constituency and former president of FBCCI and BGMEA, was placed on a three-day remand in connection with the death of Abdur Rouf during the quota reform movement on July 18.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order to show Anisul Huq arrested after Investigation Officer Md Shafiqul Islam, a sub-inspector of the Detective Branch of police, submitted an application in this regard.

According to the case statement, Fazlu was shot around 7:00pm on August 5 last year and was later declared dead at Max Medical College Hospital. On September 11, Fazlu’s brother filed a case with Bhasantek Police Station against Sheikh Hasina and 163 others.

On the other hand, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hussain passed the remand order after Investigation Officer Al Mahmud Sharif of Uttara Paschim Police Station produced Shafiul before the court and sought a 10-day remand.

In his plea, the IO said that Shafiul was directly involved in the killing of Abdur Rouf and had provided financial support to disrupt the movement. He argued that Shafiul’s remand was necessary to uncover vital information about the incident.

Shafiul’s defence lawyer filed a bail application, saying that his client was falsely implicated in the case to harass him. Shafiul, claiming innocence, told the court, “I was elected as a lawmaker through fair votes. I was not involved in the case and was implicated as part of a conspiracy to harass me.”

After hearing both sides, the magistrate rejected the bail plea and placed Shafiul on remand for questioning.

Abdur Rouf’s brother, Md Shakib Hasan, filed a case on January 8 against Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and 74 others with Uttara Paschim Police Station.

Shafiul Islam, a pro-Awami League business leader, was arrested yesterday afternoon from his Uttara residence. He was elected as an Awami League candidate in the Dhaka-10 by-election in 2020.
