“Bangladesh is not a country of any killer. It’s Bangabandhu’s ‘Sonar Bangla.’ We will certainly protect it. I can assure you all that the judiciary will play its due role” said Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Saturday.

The chief justice was speaking as chief guest at a discussion virtually, organised to launch two separate books written by two Supreme Court judges on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Constitution, Judiciary, and the roles of women and children in Liberation War.

A book titled “Bangabandhu Bangladesh: Ekjon Juddhoshishur Golpo o Onyanya” has been written by Justice Obaidul Hassan, a judge of the Appellate Division of the SC.

Another book titled “Bangabandhu: Sangbidhan Ain Adalat O Onyanya” has been written by Justice M Enayetur Rahim, a judge of the High Court Division of the SC.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief justice said, “Father of the Nation Bangabandhu’s birth centenary function was arranged very successfully. Many foreign guests joined the function. A banquet was arranged maintaining social distance. I sat on a table along with the visiting Maldives first lady and our honourable President’s wife. At one stage, Maldives first lady told me that she went to the Bangabandhu Bhaban and saw very tragic scenes there. She asked me whether we had held the trial of that brutal killings.”

“I told her (Maldives first lady) that the trial of the killing was held at a subordinate court and all the accused were given death sentences. Later, it came to the Appellate Division with the approval of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court. The Appellate Division upheld the subordinate court’s verdict,” he said.

“I also told her that the convicted killers were hanged to death. Two to three convicts are still absconding and staying abroad. The government is trying to bring those convicts back to the country,” he said.

The chief justice said, “We couldn’t inform the foreigners about the Bangabandhu murder trial, or trail of the war crimes. The books written by two judges will help the present and future generations of the country to know about Bangabandhu.
