‘Bangladesh seeks more trade benefits from the US

US Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Beigun held talks with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam at a hotel on Wednesday after arriving in Dhaka on a three-day visit to Bangladesh.

Following the meeting at Hotel Westin in the evening, Shahriar Alam said Dhaka sought more trade benefits from the United States during the meeting with the US Deputy Secretary of State.

The State Minister said the visiting US Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Beigun also assured of staying beside Bangladesh for the country’s economic recovery during the post-Covid situation.

Shahriar Alam also said Washington would hold talks again after the Myanmar’s elections on November 8 for repatriation of Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh.

Asked whether they had discussed about bringing Bangabandhu’s killer Rashed Chowdhury from the United States, he said, “It’s a sensitive issue. I can’t say anything else right now in this regard.”

Earlier, a plane carrying Beigun arrived at Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday afternoon, a foreign ministry official said.

The US Deputy Secretary of State is scheduled to meet Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen at State Guesthouse Padma on Thursday morning.

Besides, he will call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban at 12 noon.

The US Deputy Secretary is scheduled to visit Kurmitola General Hospital on Thursday to witness Bangladesh’s activities to deal with Covid-19 pandemic. He will handover medical equipment to the hospital authorities there.
