Bangladeshi students’ contribution to US economy increases significantly

Bangladeshi students contribution to the United States economy has significantly increased, according to a new report. Among the top 20 places of origin, Bangladesh remained the seventh largest source of international students to the US, said the report titled “Opens Doors 2020” by the US government. The number of students from Bangladesh increased substantially during the academic year of 2019-20, which was more than 7per cent rise from the previous academic year of 2018-19. The report reveals that a total of 8,838 students from Bangladesh went to study in the United States’ universities and colleges in 2019-20. However, the students going from India and Pakistan to the US witnessed a decline during the academic year of 2019-20. There was a 4.4 per cent drop in the total number of Indian students, while 0.2 per cent drop in the total number of Pakistani students. Indian and Pakistani students went to the US universities and colleges in 2019-20 were 1,93,124 and 7,939 respectively. The report shows that China remained the largest source of international students in the US, with the number of Chinese students in the country increasing for the 16th consecutive year. There were over 3,72,000 Chinese students in the US during 2019-20 year, said the report. According to the report, Indian students contributed US$7.6 billion to the US economy in the academic year 2019-20. The report, released by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education (IIE), for the fifth consecutive year the United States hosted more than 1 million international students (10,75,496) in an academic year.
