Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) has formed a six-member committee to examine the efficacy of locally-manufactured COVID-19 testing kit “G Rapid Dot Blot”, which was developed by Gonoshasthaya Kendra.

BSMMU Vice Chancellor Prof Kanak Kanti Barua confirmed the news today.

He said: “A six-member committee, headed by Prof Dr Shahina Tabassum, was made in this regard. He declined to disclose the names of the other members as per the request of Gonoshasthaya Kendra.”

“Representatives of Gonoshasthaya Kendra came today. We informed them about the newly-formed committee. The committee will start working after holding discussions with them tomorrow again,” he added.

Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, founder and trustee of the organisation, expressed his hope that the committee will start work soon.

“We have seen through our own tests that our kits are efficient enough. But we want BSMMU to inform the nation about the outcome of their examination within a week. The condition due to the coronavirus is worsening day by day. This is the right time to perform tests on a large scale, he said.

The European Union expressed their eagerness to take the kits, he said, adding that it was waiting for BSMMU’s observation.
