BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in a statement issued from London today, hailed the High Court’s verdict acquitting Tarique Rahman in the August 21 grenade attack case, calling it proof of a politically motivated conspiracy.

“Through this historic verdict, it has been proven that all the cases filed against Tarique Rahman were part of a political conspiracy,” Fakhrul said in the statement, which was released at 3:30 PM Bangladesh time by BNP media cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan.

The statement accused the Awami League government of pursuing politically driven charges against Tarique.

Tarique, the BNP’s acting chairman, defended himself legally and was acquitted by the High Court of all charges, said the statement.

“Expressing gratitude for the verdict, the BNP Secretary General thanked Almighty Allah and called upon party leaders and activists across the country to offer prayers and express gratitude,” the statement added.
