Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen yesterday said Bangladesh is endowed with abundant solar, wind, and tidal-flat resources and has an immense power demand.

“China stands ready to share its experience, technology and provide “China solution” to help Bangladesh realise the “Sonar Bangla” dream, thereby bringing strategic partnership between the two countries to a new level,” he said.

Ambassador Yao attended the ceremony on “successful” operation of Cox’s Bazar Wind Power Project.

Md Habibur Rahman, Senior Secretary of Power Division, and Md Jashim Uddin, Bangladeshi Ambassador to China also participated in the event.

Ambassador Yao said new energy is the key sector of China-Bangladesh economic cooperation.

On August 23, President Xi Jinping of China met with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg.

The two leaders promised that they would further advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, give full play to the advantages of economic complementarity between the two countries, and step up cooperation in new energy sector.

“The historic introduction of wind power by Chinese enterprises to Bangladesh marks a milestone of the bilateral cooperation in the new energy sector,” said the Ambassador.

Ambassador Yao noted that China owns a complete industry chain, rich construction and operation experience, and marked advantages in technology, capital and talent.

Cox’s Bazar Wind Power Project is the first Bangladeshi large-scale, centralised wind power invested by Chinese enterprises.

Once put into operation, this project is estimated to generate up to 145 gigawatt hours of electricity per year and will play a significant role in increasing the proportion of renewable energy, and promoting the use of new energy in Bangladesh.
