Death for Rape: Draft proposal to be placed in cabinet Monday

A proposal for accommodating the provision of death penalty as the maximum punishment for rape amending the amending the Prevention of Violence Against Women and Children Act 2000 will be placed in the cabinet on Monday.
Law Minister Anisul Huq on Sunday said that following the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, an initiative was taken to amend the law to accommodate the provision of death penalty for rape. The draft of the amended law is being proposed to the cabinet meeting for approval.
According to the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act, the maximum punishment for rape is life imprisonment. But in the wake of recent incidents of rape across the country, people have taken to the street demanding the death penalty for rapists. As a result, the government has taken initiatives to accommodate the provision of death penalty to the Act as the maximum punishment for rape.
