‘Delhi Crime’ season 2: Revisiting the dark underbelly of Delhi

Delhi is a city with massive economic disparities, coupled with a population that is too large and a police force that is understaffed, one can only wonder what will happen when a series of murders start to take place throughout the city?

This conundrum is explored in season two of “Delhi Crime”, through a brilliant cast, captured in the dark colour palettes and ominous music that resonates the gore amidst the bustle of Delhi.

Much like the first season, the second season has taken the internet by storm. In this season, the audience follows the journey of a seasoned investigation team who are trying to solve a murder mystery. However, unlike the first, a much bigger picture of Delhi and the developing world at large is painted.

Season 2 of “Delhi Crime” has been written by the original creator, Richie Mehta and is directed by Tanuj Chopra. The star-studded cast features Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal, Rajesh Tailang, Adil Hussain, Tillotama Shome and Anurag Arora, among others.

The performances of some of the veteran actors are simply brilliant, with their expressions capturing the pressure and mental fatigue their characters undergo. The moral dilemmas and thought processes are duly pointed out by their performances, giving the audience a window into the minds of these investigators.

The cinematography is beautifully done, I particularly loved the use of dark palettes to convey the darkness within the city. Occasionally, handheld shots are used to show the intensity of the developing storyline. To top it off, a few deliberately long scenes helps convey the weight of the subject matter.

The season begins with a series of gruesome murders of senior citizens, in some of the gated-communities of Delhi. The modus-operandi of the murders points to a gang that was active some 20 years back, leaving the police baffled. Unlike the first season, this one is not based on a true story, but rather uses a fictional one based around a real-life gang.

Pressure mounts on the investigation team to close the case immediately. However, due to a lack of evidence, the police are left clueless. Ethical questions jump in, and it is on the team to decide their next step.

“Delhi Crime” season 2 shows a nuanced portrayal of the investigation procedures. Everything from background checks to the use of technology and informant networks are showcased brilliantly. In some ways, the show allows audiences to get a peep into the world of crime investigation.

The series, however, doesn’t attempt to glorify the police force, nor does it shy away from hiding the problems within the system. Endemic corruption, systemic biases and stereotyping of certain communities are few of the problems that are well depicted in the show. The audience is well-aware that the system is crooked, and the performances so convincing, that one cannot stop hoping for the case to close properly.
