Draft of Social Media Act being formulated: Mostofa Jabbar

Data Security Act and Social Media Act are being formulated, said Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mostofa Jabbar on Thursday.
Speaking at a virtual meeting on prevention of sexual assaults on children online and related acts as the chief guest, he said a draft of Social Media Act is being formulated. It would be amended with necessary suggestions and opinions from different stakeholders.
The minister said it is possible to protect children from digital crimes using the parentile guidelines, instead of preventing them from using the digital devices.
Mostofa Jabbar also mentioned that necessity of digital Bangladesh was proved during the coronavirus pandemic.
He said only 8gbps bandwith were used in the country in 2008, while the number of users was only 8 lakh. Now, 1,800gbps bandwith are being used, while the number of Internet users has stood at 11 crore.
