A court has placed former public administration minister and Meherpur district Awami League president Farhad Hossain on a three-day remand in connection with an attack on the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.

Meherpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Begum Sharmin Nahar issued the order this afternoon.

Farhad Hossain’s brother, Sarfaraz Hossain Mridul, and his brother-in-law, district Awami League vice-president Abdus Samad Bablu Biswas, were also remanded for two days in the same case.

Inspector (Investigation) Selim Jahangir of Sadar Police Station, the investigating officer in the case, had sought a five-day remand for all three accused.

Public prosecutor Abu Saleh Mohammad Nasim, along with advocates Kamrul Islam, Maruf Ahmed Bijon, and Mokhlesur Rahman Swapan, represented the state during the remand hearing.

The defense team, including advocates AKM Shafiqul Alam, Miazan Ali, Abdus Salam, and Yarul Islam, argued against the remand.

During the hearing, activists of the anti-discrimination student movement and BNP staged a protest on the court premises, alleging various offenses against the accused and demanding exemplary punishment.

On August 5, Rashedul Islam filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act over the attack on the anti-discrimination student movement in Darbeshpur village of Meherpur Sadar upazila.

Farhad Hossain, the main accused in the case, was transferred to Meherpur from Dhaka Central Jail on January 29 after being shown a suspended arrest warrant. He was earlier arrested by Rab in the capital’s Eskaton area on September 14.

He faces multiple murder and other criminal cases in both Dhaka and Meherpur.
