The first poster for Gul Makai, activist Malala Yousafzai’s biopic, has finally been unveiled and it has already managed to create a buzz – not just nationally, but around the globe as well.

Director Amjad Khan revealed that Gul Makai is his tribute to Yousafzai for everything she has achieved and represents as a young and inspiring icon. The film’s name has been obtained from the pseudonym that the Yousafzai herself used while writing blogs about her life in the Swat valley for BBC Urdu.

The first look of the film isn’t just any old poster though, it’s a motion poster which features actor Reem Shaikh, who plays the Nobel laureate holding a burning book. Shaikh can be seen with a book in her hand which upon opening, explodes and starts to burn.

Kabir Bedi has lent his voice in the background saying, “This is about those times when the Taliban was destroying Pakistan and Afghanistan in the name of Jihad and religion. When from a very small village in Pakistan, a voice arose.”

The poster has, without a doubt, made more than just an impression and speaks volumes about the astonishing life of the young activist. The film’s official synopsis reads, “Gul Makai accounts the courageous journey and struggle of Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, from her humble upbringing in the Swat Valley to her becoming the champion for free education to all.”

It adds, “Gul Makai is a small tribute to this lion-hearted girl who is in every essence a global citizen championing a cause that transcends boundaries, caste, religion and geography.”

Alongside Shaikh, actors Divya Dutta, Mukesh Rishi, Abhimanyu Singh and Ajaz Khan also feature in the film.
