The High Court today upheld a lower court order that granted bail to Toufique Imrose Khalidi, editor-in-chief of online news portal bdnews24.com, in a corruption case.

The HC, however, said Khalidi must take permission from the trial court to go abroad and inform after his return.

This order will remain in force until the trial proceedings of the case end, Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik told The Daily Star.

The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat Lizu delivered the verdict on a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission, challenging the legality of the lower court’s bail order in the case.

On December 8, 2020, the HC issued a rule asking the state and Khalidi to explain why the bail order should not be scrapped.

The HC had issued the rule following a revision petition filed by the ACC, challenging the bail order delivered on October 20, 2020.

Gulshan Anwar Pradhan, deputy director of the anti-graft watchdog, filed the case with ACC’s integrated district office, Dhaka-1 on July 30, 2020, for allegedly depositing Tk 42 crore with no “legal source” to different banks.
